Facts Regarding Gas Powered Mowers
Each weekend, 54 million Americans mow their lawns, using an estimated 800 million gallons of gas per year. More fuel is spilled while refueling lawn equipment each year than was spilled by the Exxon Valdez.
According to the EPA, gas-powered lawnmowers account for up to 5% of US air pollution; if you include all lawn care equipment one source estimates it contributes 10-12% of the nation's air pollution
One source estimates that in 1 hour, 1 gas lawn mower can pollute as much as an SUV driven 23,600 miles. Another source calculates that in 1 hour, 1 gas lawn mower pollutes as much as 40 late model cars.
Cars have catalytic converters, most lawn mowers do not. This causes polluting hydrocarbon emissions.
While an electric mower charged with coal fired electricity significantly reduces hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, it hardly reduces carbon dioxide, a hazardous greenhouse gas. A mower charged with electricity from a wind farm cuts all of these pollutants 100%
Electric lawn mowers emit 3,300 times less hydro-carbons, 5,000 times less CO, one-fifth as much NOx and less than half the CO2 as gas lawn mowers. Wind and solar powered electric mowers reduce pollution by even more!
Each megawatt-hour of electricity that comes from wind energy helps reduce the .8 to .9 tons of greenhouse gas emissions that are produced by coal and diesel fuel generation each year.
Once turbines are built, wind power is a completely clean energy source and an infinitely sustainable energy source.
Using clean energy and supporting a clean energy market reduces our dependency on both domestic and foreign sources of fossil fuels.
